How does Hypnotherapy help?

During a session, hypnotherapy helps you focus your mind and respond more willingly to suggestions. Hypnotherapy puts you in a trance like state, where your focus is heightened and you feel calm and relaxed. The heightened awareness in this state can help you focus on your problem more deeply.

Some myths surrounding hypnotherapy.

  • A fob watch is swung in front of the person to evoke a trance - no hypnotherapists use a swinging watch. A hypnotherapist talks to you in a calm and soothing voice. Most people choose to have their eyes closed.

  • That the hypnotherapist can control you - all hypnosis is self hypnosis, as the client you always remain in control of what you do or don't do.

  • That your mind is too strong to be hypnotised - most people that come for hypnotherapy are open to the experience and therefore can go into trance. We go into trance throughout the day on our own, when we day dream, watch television and when we zone out while we are driving.

  • That you can be cured in one session - hypnosis is not a magic wand it helps people focus their minds on new behaviours and patterns they would rather do. When we are calm and relax we are more open to new ideas.

What to expect during a hypnotherapy session?

During the hypnosis part of the session you are usually asked to sit in a comfortable chair where your feet and head are supported. Here at Just Breathe the treatment goals and plan are discussed and agreed upon before the hypnotherapy part of the session takes place.

Once you are comfortable the therapist will start to talk to you in a calm, soothing manner to gently encourage you into a trance like state. Throughout the hypnosis session the therapist will introduce the new ideas and strategies that were agreed upon in the interview part of the session. Quite often metaphors, stories and visual images are used to reinforce these new ideas.

When the session is over the therapist will gently bring you out of the trance. You may or may not remember what was said. This has no impact on the effectiveness of the session. The unconscious mind will have been aware and listening on some level. At Just Breathe you are also sent a recording of the session to listen to as homework. This will reinforce the ideas and strategies to help you get to your goals more efficiently.

What are the benefits of hypnotherapy?

Awareness - hypnosis is a heightened state of awareness. It allows a person to detach from their environment and become absorbed in the inner experience throughout the session creating a more inward focused experience.

Focus - the wonderful thing with hypnosis is the focus. In our day to day lives we are constantly surrounded by distractions. Our conscious mind becomes so cluttered with all our day to day concerns. Hypnosis allows you to completely focus on the problem at hand and the new ideas and concepts that are introduced.

Relaxation - hypnosis for most people is deeply relaxing. As our conscious mind becomes quiet it allows our unconscious mind to deeply focus on the new ideas and strategies. As you are more relaxed you tend to be more open to new suggestions and better able to face your problem or fears.
