I want to introduce you to the concept of the Power Pose, or remind you, if this is something you have seen before. I first saw this on Grey's Anatomy years ago. I remember the scene vividly with two of the characters taking this Power Pose before entering into a very complex major surgery and it got me intrigued.
Amy Cuddy is known for her promotion of this and other power poses. Amy's studies showed there was a significant link between these poses and feelings of power. Power posing was really big in 2012 and for a while it was like everyone was power posing, before interviews, presentations, sports game you name it people were power posing for it.
SO LET'S GET YOUR SUPERHERO ON!
Stand with your feet hip width apart.
Put your hands on your hips.
Lift your chest to the sky.
Look up above the horizon.
Stand here for 2 minutes.
I like to include a breathing technique while I am standing in this pose. My favourite is breathe in and count your inhale. Whatever the count is for your inhale, double it for your exhale. For example breathe in for a count of four, breathe out for a count of 8. When you are breathing, breathe deep into your belly and let your belly expand as you inhale and contract as you exhale. This is great to add some calm into the mix with the confidence the pose is bringing in.
If you prefer affirmations to the breathing you might like to repeat in your head your favourite empowering affirmation. If I use an affirmation, its normally something like "You've got this!!!"
As the day gets on and busy its easy to forget about your body language. I find it best to start my day like this. Its hard to tell myself I don't have time, or I am just too busy, when all it takes is just 2 short minutes.
