I am sure if your are reading this you have experienced overwhelm before. I used to do this on a regular basis at work.
I would get into work, look at my to do list, then notice the emails banked up that I need to address and see all the paperwork in my in tray. That feeling of overwhelm starts creeping in. Then when the boss comes out and asks me to do a couple of more things I go completely into overwhelm.
How am I going to get this all done?
I can't possible get through it all!
My chest tightens, I feel anxious in my stomach, I can feel my heart rate increasing.
This simple but lovely NLP technique Lori Hammond calls the 3B's can take that overwhelm feeling and put in back in its place. All you need to do is change your body, breathe and belief.
This is how it is done -
Change your body posture
Most of the time when we are in overwhelm we will be hunched over, shoulders rounded, looking down.
Change your body by sitting up, back straight, lifting your chest and taking your gaze above the horizon line.
Change your breathing
When we are in overwhelm our breathing tends to increase and becomes more shallow.
Change your breathing. Inhale through the nose, a big deep inhale and exhale slowly out of your mouth. Do this at least three times.
Change your belief
In overwhelm our belief is, we can't do this, we will fail, there is too much to do, too much pressure.
With each exhale say to yourself a statement that helps. For example "I've got this", "I can do it", "One step at a time" or "I can only do what I can do"
Then just focusing on the next thing you need to do, continue the day. By coming out of overwhelm and into focus you will naturally get way more done on the list.
